Many cities around the world pride themselves on their cathedrals. For Liverpool, that pride is doubled, with two impressive cathedrals to call its own.
The first is the Liverpool Cathedral. As the largest cathedral in the United Kingdom, it serves as the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Liverpool. Planning for the cathedral began in 1904, with fierce competition, eliciting over 100 architectural applicants. Despite numerous renowned applicants, the designs of a young architect named Giles Gilbert Scott were selected. After years of work, the structure was completed in 1978.
Today, guests enjoy perusing the massive structure, which is nearly 9,700 square metres in size. The cathedral has the largest bell tower in the world, with thirteen bells that are noted for having the heaviest peal in the world. Known as the Bartlett bells, these bells each have a distinctive size and tone, which creates a unique sound when they are rung. The Gothic Revival styling utilises high arches and epic stained glass windows for a truly impressive finish.
Just over a half mile away is the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. Unlike the Liverpool Cathedral, this church serves a Roman Catholic congregation. The cathedral was supposed to be built in the mid-1850s, but construction was halted due to monetary reasons. Construction began again in the 1930s, with an ambitious and opulent traditional design that rivalled the construction of the Liverpool Cathedral. However, those plans also proved to be too costly.
Sir Frederick Gibberd provided revised plans in late 1950s. The innovative design was a stark contrast to the Liverpool Cathedral across town. Construction was completed in around four years, and the building was consecrated in 1967. The circular shape has a distinctive, modern feel, and with well placed lighting, the unique lines of the building are impressive at day and night. The interior features marble floors and stained glass in the dome as well as an unusual baldachino, which highlights the altar.
A holiday in Liverpool is not complete without visiting these two sites, so some tourists plan their accommodations accordingly. Though there are numerous hotels in Liverpool throughout the city, there are also specific liverpool hotel in close proximity to either cathedral. Many guests choose Liverpool hotels around Hope Street, which connects the two impressive cathedrals. No matter which one of the hotels in Liverpool one chooses, the twin cathedrals make for a great starting point for any Liverpool holiday.
